ODS vs XLS: What Is the Difference?

ODS (OpenDocument Spreadsheet) is an open XML-based format used by LibreOffice Calc, Apache OpenOffice Calc, and Google Sheets. It is part of the OASIS OpenDocument specification and stores data in a ZIP-compressed XML structure. ODS is common in government agencies, educational institutions, and organizations that use open-source software.

XLS is the binary spreadsheet format used by Microsoft Excel from version 97 through 2003. Although Microsoft introduced the newer XLSX format in 2007, XLS remains in active use. Many legacy ERP systems, accounting packages, database import tools, and older Excel macros expect XLS input. Regulatory archives in some industries also mandate XLS for long-term storage of historical data.

Opening an ODS file in an older version of Excel (or in software that only reads XLS) typically fails or produces garbled output. Converting ODS to XLS with a dedicated tool ensures that formatting, formulas, and cell structure transfer cleanly, without manual re-entry or "Save As" workarounds one file at a time.

How to Convert ODS to XLS

  • Step 1. Launch Total Excel Converter. The left panel displays a folder tree for quick navigation.
  • Step 2. Browse to the folder that contains your ODS files. The file list in the center shows all supported spreadsheets.
  • Step 3. Check the ODS files you want to convert. Use Check All to select every file in the folder for batch conversion.
  • Step 4. Click XLS in the format toolbar at the top of the window.
  • Step 5. Set the destination folder and adjust any settings in the conversion wizard (sheet selection, header/footer, encoding).
  • Step 6. Press Start. The converter processes all selected files and saves the XLS output to your chosen folder.

Total Excel Converter - ODS to XLS conversion interface

The entire conversion takes seconds, even for large batches. Your original ODS files remain untouched.

Command-Line Conversion

Total Excel Converter includes a command-line interface for scripted or scheduled conversions:

ExcelConverter.exe C:\Data\report.ods C:\Output\report.xls

You can specify sheet selection, encoding, and other parameters directly in the command. This makes it easy to integrate ODS-to-XLS conversion into automated workflows, nightly ETL jobs, or server-side processes using .bat files or PowerShell scripts.

Why Use Total Excel Converter?

Green PlusBatch processing. Select hundreds of ODS files and convert them to XLS in one run. Processing an entire folder takes about as long as converting a single file.

Green PlusFormula translation. Cell formulas, cross-sheet references, and named ranges are converted from ODS syntax to Excel syntax automatically.

Green PlusBuilt-in viewer. Preview any spreadsheet before conversion to verify that the source data and layout are correct.

Green PlusNo cloud uploads. All processing happens on your PC. Confidential financial data, HR spreadsheets, and trade secrets never leave your machine.

Green Plus20+ output formats. Besides XLS, convert ODS to XLSX, PDF, DOC, HTML, CSV, XML, SQL, DBF, LaTeX, DIFF, SYLK, and more — all from the same tool.

When Do You Need ODS to XLS Conversion?

There are several common scenarios where converting OpenDocument spreadsheets to the older Excel format is necessary:
  1. Legacy system compatibility. Many ERP, CRM, and accounting systems built before 2007 only accept XLS imports. If your data is in ODS, converting to XLS is the fastest way to feed it into these systems without modifying their import logic.
  2. Older Excel versions. Colleagues or clients still running Excel 2003 or earlier cannot open ODS files. Sending XLS ensures they can view and edit the spreadsheet without installing additional software.
  3. VBA macro compatibility. Legacy Excel macros (VBA) often expect XLS workbook structures. Converting ODS to XLS before running macros avoids runtime errors and object model mismatches.
  4. Regulatory and archival requirements. Some industries (banking, insurance, government auditing) require historical data in the XLS format that was standard at the time the data was created. ODS does not satisfy these compliance requirements.
  5. Database and reporting tools. Certain BI and reporting platforms import XLS natively but have limited or no ODS support. Converting first ensures a clean data import without extra plugins.

Rated 4.7/5 based on customer reviews
5 Star

"Our SAP system from 2005 only imports XLS files. We receive weekly ODS reports from a partner that uses LibreOffice. Total Excel Converter batch-converts the entire set in under a minute. Formulas and cell formatting carry over without issues."

5 Star Daniel Richter ERP Administrator

"Regulatory audits require us to submit historical spreadsheets in the original XLS format. Many of our archived files had been re-saved as ODS over the years. The command-line mode let me script a one-time migration of 3,000+ files back to XLS. Every cell and formula checked out."

5 Star Laura Medina Financial Auditor

"Several departments still run Excel 2003 on locked-down terminals. When staff send ODS files from home, I convert them to XLS before distributing. Batch mode saves me from opening each file individually. Wish the UI had a dark theme, but functionally it does exactly what I need."

XLS (Excel 97-2003) is required by many legacy ERP systems, older versions of Excel, VBA macro workflows, and regulatory archives that predate the XLSX format. If your target system only accepts .xls files, converting ODS to XLS is the correct choice.

Absolutely. Total Excel Converter supports batch conversion. Select all ODS files in a folder (or use Check All), choose XLS as the target format, and press Start. Hundreds of files are processed in seconds.
No. Total Excel Converter is a standalone application. It reads ODS files and writes XLS files using its own engine — no Excel, LibreOffice, or any other office suite is required.
Yes. Total Excel Converter includes a built-in command-line interface. You can automate ODS-to-XLS conversion in batch scripts, scheduled tasks, or server-side workflows without any GUI interaction.
The XLS format supports up to 65,536 rows and 256 columns per sheet. If your ODS file exceeds these limits, consider converting to XLSX instead, which supports over 1 million rows. Total Excel Converter handles both formats.
