XLSM vs XLSX: What Is the Difference?

XLSM (Excel Macro-Enabled Workbook) is a Microsoft Excel format that stores spreadsheet data together with embedded VBA (Visual Basic for Applications) macros. Macros automate repetitive tasks, run calculations, and interact with external data sources. Excel uses the .xlsm extension to signal that a workbook contains executable code.

XLSX (Excel Workbook) is the standard Excel format introduced in Office 2007. It stores the same spreadsheet data — cells, formulas, charts, styles — but does not support embedded macros. When Excel saves a workbook as XLSX, it strips all VBA code from the file.

The key difference is security. XLSM files can execute arbitrary code when opened, which makes them a common vector for malware. Many corporate email systems, firewalls, and document management platforms block or quarantine XLSM attachments. Converting XLSM to XLSX removes the macro code and produces a file that passes security filters without losing any spreadsheet data.

How to Convert XLSM to XLSX

  • Step 1. Launch Total Excel Converter. The left panel displays a folder tree for quick navigation.
  • Step 2. Browse to the folder that contains your XLSM files. The file list in the center shows all supported spreadsheets, including .xlsm.
  • Step 3. Check the XLSM files you want to convert. Use Check All to select every file in the folder for batch conversion.
  • Step 4. Click XLSX in the format toolbar at the top of the window.
  • Step 5. Set the destination folder and adjust settings in the conversion wizard (file naming template, header/footer, sheet selection).
  • Step 6. Press Start. The converter processes all selected files, removes VBA macros, and saves clean XLSX output to your chosen folder.

Total Excel Converter - XLSM to XLSX interface

The entire conversion takes seconds, even for large batches. Your original XLSM files remain untouched.

Command-Line Conversion

Total Excel Converter includes a command-line interface that lets you convert XLSM to XLSX from scripts, batch files, or scheduled tasks. Example:

ExcelConverter.exe C:\Data\report.xlsm C:\Output\report.xlsx

You can process an entire folder in a single line:

ExcelConverter.exe C:\Data\*.xlsm C:\Output\ -cXLSX

This makes it easy to integrate XLSM-to-XLSX conversion into automated workflows — run it nightly to strip macros from incoming spreadsheets, add it to a .bat script for scheduled processing, or call it from a server-side pipeline.

Why Use Total Excel Converter?

Batch processing

Select hundreds of XLSM files and convert them to XLSX in a single run. The program handles large queues without slowing down — a thousand files take only marginally longer than one.

Macro removal with data preservation

VBA macros are stripped cleanly. All cell values, formulas, conditional formatting, charts, pivot tables, and named ranges remain in the output XLSX file. You get a safe, macro-free copy without rebuilding anything manually.

Formatting preservation

Fonts, cell colors, borders, merged cells, number formats, and conditional formatting survive the conversion. Your XLSX files look identical to the XLSM originals — minus the macros.

Built-in viewer

Preview any spreadsheet before conversion to verify the source data. Check formulas, inspect formatting, and confirm sheet structure without opening Excel.

No cloud uploads

All processing happens locally on your PC. Financial reports, HR spreadsheets, and trade secrets never leave your machine. No internet connection is required.

20+ output formats

Besides XLSX, convert XLSM to PDF, DOC, HTML, CSV, XML, TXT, SQL, DBF, LaTeX, DIFF, SYLK, and more — all from the same tool.

When Do You Need XLSM to XLSX Conversion?

There are several common scenarios where converting macro-enabled workbooks to standard Excel format is necessary:
  1. Email security policies. Most corporate email systems flag or block XLSM attachments. Converting to XLSX before sending ensures your files reach the recipient without being quarantined by spam filters or security gateways.
  2. Compliance and auditing. Regulated industries (finance, healthcare, government) often prohibit executable content in submitted documents. Converting XLSM to XLSX satisfies these requirements while preserving all reporting data.
  3. SharePoint and cloud storage. Some document management systems restrict macro-enabled files. XLSX uploads pass validation checks that XLSM files fail.
  4. Archiving completed projects. Once a project is done, the macros that drove it are no longer needed. Archiving as XLSX reduces file size and eliminates the risk of accidentally running outdated code years later.
  5. Distributing reports to non-technical users. End users who receive XLSM files see security warnings in Excel. Converting to XLSX removes the warning and gives them a clean spreadsheet they can open without hesitation.

"I regularly get XLSM exports from our CRM system that need to go into SharePoint, which rejects macro-enabled files. Total Excel Converter solves this in batch mode. Pivot tables, charts, and named ranges all survive. Would appreciate a drag-and-drop option, but the folder browser works well enough."
