MBOX is Thunderbird's storage format. It packs multiple emails into a single binary file, complete with MIME headers, HTML bodies, Base64-encoded attachments, and transport metadata. An MBOX file is designed for email clients, not for human reading. Opening one in Notepad gives you a wall of encoded data mixed with message boundaries.
Plain text (TXT) is the simplest document format. A .txt file contains only human-readable characters — no markup, no formatting, no binary data. Text files open instantly in Notepad, VS Code, terminal editors, or any text viewer on Windows, macOS, and Linux.
Converting Thunderbird to text strips away HTML tags, MIME encoding, and email transport headers, leaving you with clean message content: who sent it, when, the subject line, and the body. The result is compact, universally readable, and easy to search with standard tools like grep or Windows Search.
The output files contain clean, readable text. Attachments are saved separately to the same or a different folder — they are not embedded in the text output.
Total Thunderbird Converter includes a command-line interface for automated text exports. Example:
ThunderbirdConverter.exe -sTXT "C:\Users\John\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles\abc123.default\Mail\Local Folders\Inbox" C:\Output\TXT\
Combine this with Windows Task Scheduler to run nightly exports or process multiple Thunderbird profiles in a .bat script.
Selective field export. Choose exactly which email fields appear in the output: sender, recipient, date, subject, body, CC, BCC, or any combination. Skip unnecessary headers to keep the text clean and focused.
Merge or split. Save each email as a separate .txt file for individual access, or merge an entire folder into one long text file — useful for full-text search across thousands of messages.
Customizable file naming. Name output files using date, sender, subject, or message index. A template like [Date]-[Subject].txt produces filenames that sort chronologically and are easy to find.
Batch processing. Export thousands of emails in one session. The converter handles large Thunderbird mailboxes without running out of memory.
Attachment handling. Attachments are saved to a separate folder alongside the text output. Documents, images, and archives remain intact and accessible.
Multiple output formats. Besides TXT, export Thunderbird emails to PDF, DOC, HTML, TIFF, EML, or PST from the same tool.

"I export thousands of Thunderbird emails to text for keyword analysis in Python. The selective field export is exactly what I needed — I include only the subject and body, skip the headers. A 4 GB mailbox converts to text in under 10 minutes."
Elena Sorokina Research Analyst
"Our audit trail requires email records in a non-proprietary format. Text files meet the requirement perfectly. The merge option lets me produce one file per quarter for the archive. Dates and sender info are preserved in every entry."
James Whitfield Compliance Officer
"Switched from Thunderbird to a web-based client and needed a searchable copy of five years of email. Converting to text made the archive compact and easy to browse in any text editor. Wish there was an option to filter by date range before export."
