What is an HWP file?

HWP is the native document format of Hancom Office (formerly Hangul Word Processor), the dominant word processing suite in South Korea. HWP files use a proprietary binary format with features specific to Korean typography: vertical text, complex Hangul character handling, and Korean-language form fields. Outside South Korea, almost no software opens HWP files — Microsoft Word, LibreOffice, and Google Docs all lack native HWP support. Converting to DOCX makes the document readable and editable in any modern word processor.

What formatting is preserved when converting HWP to DOCX?

Text content, paragraph structure, headings, bold/italic/underline styling, numbered and bulleted lists, tables, and embedded images are all transferred to the DOCX output. Korean Hangul text is preserved with correct Unicode encoding. HWP-specific layout features — such as vertical text boxes and Korean ruby annotations — may be approximated or flattened, since DOCX has no direct equivalents for some Hangul-specific constructs.

Why can't I open an HWP file directly in Microsoft Word?

Microsoft Word does not include a built-in HWP filter. Hancom does publish a free HWP viewer for Windows, but it requires installation and does not allow editing in Word. The Korean government and many South Korean companies distribute official documents, contracts, and forms in HWP format, which creates compatibility problems for anyone outside Korea using standard office software. Converting to DOCX removes this dependency entirely.

Will Korean fonts render correctly in the DOCX output?

The text content is encoded as standard Unicode (UTF-16), which DOCX fully supports. The font names from the original HWP document (such as Nanum Gothic, Malgun Gothic, or Batang) are written into the DOCX font table. If those Korean fonts are installed on your Windows system, Word will render them correctly. On systems without Korean fonts, Word falls back to a system font that covers the Hangul Unicode block — the text remains readable but the typeface may differ.

Is there a file size limit for online HWP to DOCX conversion?
