| Description | The LRV video format is a low-resolution proxy format used by GoPro cameras to provide users with a quick and easy way to review and share their footage on mobile devices. LRV stands for Low-Resolution Video, and the format is designed to provide a compressed version of the original video that is optimized for playback on mobile devices. The LRV format is typically created automatically by GoPro cameras when users record videos, and the files are saved alongside the higher-quality MP4 or HEVC video files. The LRV format uses H.264 video compression and a low resolution of 320x240 pixels to reduce the file size of the video, making it easier to transfer and share on mobile devices. One of the main advantages of the LRV format is its compatibility with a wide range of mobile devices, including smartphones and tablets. The low resolution of the format means that it can be played back smoothly on devices with limited processing power or bandwidth, making it ideal for sharing videos on social media or messaging apps. In addition to its compatibility with mobile devices, the LRV format also provides users with a quick and easy way to preview their footage before transferring it to a computer for editing. Because the format is low-resolution, it can be quickly transferred to a mobile device using Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, allowing users to review their footage while on the go. Despite its advantages, the LRV format is not suitable for all purposes. Because the format uses low resolution and compression, the video quality is significantly reduced compared to the original footage. As a result, the format is not suitable for professional editing or post-production work, and users may prefer to work with the higher-quality MP4 or HEVC files instead. Overall, the LRV format is a useful and convenient option for GoPro users who want to quickly and easily share their footage on mobile devices. Its compatibility with a wide range of devices and quick transfer times make it a popular choice for sharing videos on social media or messaging apps. |

| Description | MP4 files can contain video and sound data. It is a file container that supports different multimedia content types such as multiple audio streams, subtitles, 2D and 3D image frames. MP4 is also used for streaming media services (online or digital TV). This file type supports the control of transmission speeds for media signal, as well as correcting corrupted frames. Thanks to comparatively low system requirements, MP4 is now the most popular container type for sharing media. |

GoPro cameras create a low-resolution proxy video (LRV) file alongside every full-resolution recording. The proxy uses the .lrv extension, which no standard media player recognizes — even though the video data inside is standard H.264. Converting to MP4 gives you a file that plays in VLC, Windows Media Player, QuickTime, and any mobile video app, and that you can share on social media as a quick preview.
LRV (Low Resolution Video) is a proxy video format generated by all modern GoPro cameras simultaneously with the full-resolution MP4 recording. The purpose is speed: when you connect a GoPro to the GoPro Quik app via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi, the app displays the LRV proxy for smooth, responsive playback without transferring the full-resolution 4K file. The LRV file is stored in the same folder as the main MP4 on the SD card, with the same filename but .LRV extension.
LRV files typically record at 240p (426×240) or 360p at a low bitrate (typically 1–4 Mbps), compared to the full-res 4K recording at 50–100 Mbps.
Each recording produces at least two files: GH010123.MP4 (full res) and GH010123.LRV (proxy). The numbering is identical for easy pairing.
| Property | LRV Proxy | Full-Resolution MP4 |
|---|---|---|
| Resolution | 240p–360p (426×240 or 640×360) | 1080p, 2.7K, 4K, or 5.3K |
| Bitrate | 1–4 Mbps | 25–120 Mbps |
| File size (1 min) | 5–30 MB | 150–750 MB |
| File extension | .LRV | .MP4 |
| Purpose | Quik app preview / proxy editing | Final footage for editing and archival |
| Media player support | None (extension not recognized) | Universal |
| Social media share quality | Very low (240p–360p) | Full quality |
LRV files are stored in the same DCIM folder as the MP4 files on the GoPro SD card. On Windows, they may be hidden — enable "Show hidden files and folders" in File Explorer Options. The folder path is typically SD_CARD:\DCIM\100GOPRO\. Each LRV file shares its filename prefix with the corresponding full-resolution MP4 (e.g., GH010234.MP4 and GH010234.LRV).
Professional video editors (DaVinci Resolve, Adobe Premiere) support proxy workflows: edit using the lightweight LRV proxy, then re-link to the full-resolution MP4 for final export. Converting the LRV to a standard MP4 first makes it importable into any NLE editor. After editing, relink to the original GoPro MP4 files for a full-quality export. This workflow is especially useful when editing 4K GoPro footage on a laptop with limited GPU performance.
