EML (Electronic Mail) is the standard file format for individual email messages defined by RFC 822. Each .eml file stores the complete email: headers (From, To, Subject, Date), body content (plain text and/or HTML), and MIME-encoded attachments. EML is produced by virtually every email client — Microsoft Outlook, Mozilla Thunderbird, Windows Mail, Apple Mail, and webmail export tools.
The problem with EML files is portability. To read an EML file, you need a compatible email application. You cannot attach an EML to a case file, import it into a document management system, or publish it on a website without first converting it to a universal format like PDF, DOC, or HTML.
| Format | Use Case |
|---|---|
| Archiving, legal discovery, sharing — fixed layout, password protection | |
| DOC / DOCX | Editing email content in Word, adding annotations |
| HTML | Publishing emails on web, preserving original formatting |
| TIFF | Court filings, document imaging systems, fax |
| JPEG | Quick image snapshots of emails |
| TXT | Plain-text extraction, data import, text analysis |
| RTF | Cross-platform editable documents |
| PST | Importing emails into Outlook |
| XLS | Email metadata extraction into spreadsheet columns |
Batch conversion handles hundreds of emails in minutes. Each output file is named after the original email (or use a custom naming template based on sender, date, or subject).
Total Mail Converter includes a command-line interface for scripted and automated workflows. Convert EML to PDF:
MailConverter.exe C:\Emails\message.eml C:\Output\message.pdf -cPDF
Process an entire folder of EML files to DOC:
MailConverter.exe C:\Emails\*.eml C:\Output\ -cDOC -IncludeAttachments
Integrate EML conversion into automated pipelines — scheduled tasks, .bat scripts, or server-side processing. The command line supports every option available in the GUI.
One tool handles every EML conversion scenario: PDF for archiving, DOC for editing, HTML for publishing, TIFF for legal, TXT for data extraction, PST for Outlook import, and more. No need to buy separate converters for each format.
Select an entire folder — or multiple folders — and convert thousands of EML files in one run. The program processes large queues quickly and creates one output file per email.
Embed attachments as additional pages (PDF, TIFF), save them as separate files alongside the converted email, or skip them entirely. You control this per conversion, not per file.
Name output files using email metadata: sender name, subject line, date, or a combination. Useful for organizing converted emails in a logical folder structure without manual renaming.
Add page numbers, dates, file names, or sequential Bates numbers to every page. Essential for legal teams producing court-ready document sets from email archives.
All conversion happens on your local PC. Attorney-client communications, financial records, HR correspondence — nothing is uploaded to external servers. No internet connection required.

"We converted over 40,000 EML files to PDF with Bates stamps for a regulatory review. Total Mail Converter handled the entire batch overnight via the command line. Attachments were embedded as extra pages, exactly as we needed. This tool paid for itself in the first week."
Patricia Lawson Legal Operations Manager
"Used this to migrate email archives from a legacy system. Converting EML to PST let us import everything into Outlook cleanly. The custom file naming by date and sender made it easy to verify nothing was lost. Reliable and straightforward."
Daniel Varga IT Migration Specialist
"I convert EML files to TXT for text analysis. The batch mode saves me hours of manual extraction. Header fields come through cleanly, and the encoding options handle multilingual emails well. Would like a direct CSV export of email metadata, but the XLS output works as an alternative."
