EML Converter — Convert EML Emails to PDF, DOC, TIFF and 15+ Formats

EML files pile up fast. Every email client — Outlook, Thunderbird, Windows Mail, Apple Mail — saves messages as .eml, and sooner or later you need those messages in a different format: PDF for archiving, DOC for editing, TIFF for court filings, HTML for publishing. Opening each file, copying text, and reformatting is not an option when you have hundreds or thousands of emails. Total Mail Converter converts EML files to 15+ output formats in batch, with full control over layout, attachments, and metadata. This EML converter:
  • Converts EML to PDF, DOC, RTF, HTML, TXT, TIFF, JPEG, PST, and more
  • Processes hundreds of EML files in one batch
  • Handles attachments: embed, save separately, or skip
  • Adds headers, footers, page numbers, and Bates stamps
  • Works 100% offline — emails never leave your machine
  • Includes a 30-day free trial with full functionality

What Is an EML File?

EML (Electronic Mail) is the standard file format for individual email messages defined by RFC 822. Each .eml file stores the complete email: headers (From, To, Subject, Date), body content (plain text and/or HTML), and MIME-encoded attachments. EML is produced by virtually every email client — Microsoft Outlook, Mozilla Thunderbird, Windows Mail, Apple Mail, and webmail export tools.

The problem with EML files is portability. To read an EML file, you need a compatible email application. You cannot attach an EML to a case file, import it into a document management system, or publish it on a website without first converting it to a universal format like PDF, DOC, or HTML.

Supported Output Formats

FormatUse Case
PDFArchiving, legal discovery, sharing — fixed layout, password protection

HTMLPublishing emails on web, preserving original formatting

PSTImporting emails into Outlook
XLSEmail metadata extraction into spreadsheet columns

How to Convert EML Files

  • Step 1. Launch Total Mail Converter. The left panel shows a folder tree. Navigate to the folder containing your EML files.
  • Step 2. The file list displays every email with sender, subject, and date. Check individual files or click Check All for batch processing.
  • Step 3. Click the target format in the toolbar: PDF, DOC, HTML, TIFF, TXT, or any other supported format.
  • Step 4. In the conversion wizard, set the destination folder, page layout, and format-specific options (PDF encryption, TIFF compression, HTML encoding, etc.).
  • Step 5. Choose how to handle attachments: embed them in the output, save as separate files, or skip entirely. Add headers, footers, or Bates stamps if needed.
  • Step 6. Press Start. The converter processes all selected emails and saves the output files. Original EML files remain untouched.

Total Mail Converter - EML conversion interface

Batch conversion handles hundreds of emails in minutes. Each output file is named after the original email (or use a custom naming template based on sender, date, or subject).

Command-Line Conversion

Total Mail Converter includes a command-line interface for scripted and automated workflows. Convert EML to PDF:

MailConverter.exe C:\Emails\message.eml C:\Output\message.pdf -cPDF

Process an entire folder of EML files to DOC:

MailConverter.exe C:\Emails\*.eml C:\Output\ -cDOC -IncludeAttachments

Integrate EML conversion into automated pipelines — scheduled tasks, .bat scripts, or server-side processing. The command line supports every option available in the GUI.

Why Use Total Mail Converter?

15+ output formats

One tool handles every EML conversion scenario: PDF for archiving, DOC for editing, HTML for publishing, TIFF for legal, TXT for data extraction, PST for Outlook import, and more. No need to buy separate converters for each format.

Batch processing

Select an entire folder — or multiple folders — and convert thousands of EML files in one run. The program processes large queues quickly and creates one output file per email.

Flexible attachment handling

Embed attachments as additional pages (PDF, TIFF), save them as separate files alongside the converted email, or skip them entirely. You control this per conversion, not per file.

Custom file naming

Name output files using email metadata: sender name, subject line, date, or a combination. Useful for organizing converted emails in a logical folder structure without manual renaming.

Headers, footers, and Bates stamps

Add page numbers, dates, file names, or sequential Bates numbers to every page. Essential for legal teams producing court-ready document sets from email archives.

No cloud uploads

All conversion happens on your local PC. Attorney-client communications, financial records, HR correspondence — nothing is uploaded to external servers. No internet connection required.

When Do You Need an EML Converter?

There are several common scenarios where converting EML files to other formats is the right solution:
  1. Legal discovery. Law firms and compliance teams convert EML files to PDF or TIFF with Bates stamps for court submissions. The fixed-layout output is tamper-evident and accepted by courts worldwide.
  2. Email archiving. Organizations archive email correspondence as PDF or TIFF for regulatory compliance (HIPAA, SOX, GDPR). Converting EML to a universal format ensures the archive remains readable regardless of which email client was used originally.
  3. Migrating between email clients. When switching from one email system to another, converting EML files to PST (Outlook), HTML, or other intermediate formats bridges the gap between incompatible systems.
  4. Content extraction. Writers, researchers, and data analysts convert EML to TXT or DOC to extract email content for reports, publications, or text-analysis workflows without manual copy-paste.
  5. Sharing with non-technical recipients. Not everyone can open EML files. Converting to PDF or DOC produces documents that any recipient can view without special software.

5 Star

"We converted over 40,000 EML files to PDF with Bates stamps for a regulatory review. Total Mail Converter handled the entire batch overnight via the command line. Attachments were embedded as extra pages, exactly as we needed. This tool paid for itself in the first week."

5 Star Patricia Lawson Legal Operations Manager

"Used this to migrate email archives from a legacy system. Converting EML to PST let us import everything into Outlook cleanly. The custom file naming by date and sender made it easy to verify nothing was lost. Reliable and straightforward."

5 Star Daniel Varga IT Migration Specialist

"I convert EML files to TXT for text analysis. The batch mode saves me hours of manual extraction. Header fields come through cleanly, and the encoding options handle multilingual emails well. Would like a direct CSV export of email metadata, but the XLS output works as an alternative."
