What Is an MSG File?

MSG is Microsoft Outlook's native email file format. Each .msg file stores a single email message: headers (From, To, Subject, Date), body content (plain text and/or HTML with rich formatting), embedded images, and file attachments. MSG uses Microsoft's Compound File Binary Format (CFBF), which is a proprietary container that only Outlook and a few specialized viewers can read natively.

The problem with MSG files is vendor lock-in. If you don't have Outlook, you can't open them. How to Convert MSG Files
