| Description | The Nikon Electronic Format (NEF) is a proprietary raw image format used by Nikon digital cameras. It is based on the TIFF image format and contains uncompressed, unprocessed data from the camera's sensor. The NEF format provides photographers with the ability to capture high-quality images with greater detail and flexibility. Since NEF files are not compressed or processed, they allow for greater control over image processing during post-production. This makes the NEF format a popular choice for professional photographers who want to maintain the highest level of image quality and flexibility. NEF files can be converted into other image formats such as JPEG or TIFF using software applications such as Adobe Photoshop or Lightroom. This allows for greater compatibility with other software and devices, while still maintaining the benefits of the NEF format. One advantage of the NEF format is its ability to retain a high degree of image detail and color information. This makes it particularly useful for photographers who need to adjust exposure or white balance during post-processing without losing image quality. In summary, the NEF format provides professional photographers with the ability to capture high-quality, uncompressed images with greater flexibility and control during post-processing. While it is a proprietary format specific to Nikon cameras, it can be converted into other formats for greater compatibility with other software and devices. |

| Description | JPG is the file format for images made by digital cameras and spread throughout the world wide web. Saving in JPG format an image loses its quality, because of the size compression. But at the end you have a much smaller file easy to archive, send, and publish in the web. These are the cases when an image's size matters more than image's quality. Nonetheless, by using professional software you can select the compression degree and so affect the image's quality. |

NEF (Nikon Electronic Format) is Nikon's proprietary RAW image format, used by Nikon DSLRs and mirrorless cameras. A NEF file contains the unprocessed data captured directly from the image sensor — 12-bit or 14-bit color depth, depending on the camera — along with in-camera settings (white balance, Picture Control, active D-Lighting), lens correction data, and full EXIF metadata.
Because NEF files are raw sensor data rather than a processed image, they cannot be opened by standard image viewers, browsers, or most applications without dedicated RAW support. Converting to JPG makes the photos immediately usable on any device or platform.
No Nikon software, no Adobe subscription, no registration required.
| Property | NEF (RAW) | JPG |
|---|---|---|
| Color depth | 12-bit or 14-bit (4,096 – 16,384 tonal values per channel) | 8-bit (256 values per channel) |
| Typical file size (24 MP) | 25–35 MB | 3–8 MB |
| White balance | Adjustable non-destructively in post | Baked in — changing it degrades quality |
| Exposure recovery | 2–3 stops of highlight / shadow recovery possible | Clipped highlights are unrecoverable |
| Noise reduction | Applied in post with full control | Applied in-camera and baked in |
| Universal compatibility | Nikon / RAW software only | Any browser, viewer, platform |
| Direct sharing | Not practical | Yes — email, social media, print |
The output JPEG inherits the full EXIF metadata from the NEF: camera model, lens type, focal length, aperture, shutter speed, ISO, flash mode, GPS coordinates (if enabled in-camera), and the original capture timestamp. Photo management tools — Lightroom, Capture One, Google Photos, Apple Photos, Windows Photos — all sort and organize by these values.
The converter supports NEF files from all major Nikon DSLRs and mirrorless cameras, including:
