| Description | The VTF (Valve Texture Format) is a proprietary image file format developed by Valve Corporation for use in their video games. It supports a variety of compression algorithms, including DXT, a format commonly used in real-time graphics applications, as well as VTF-specific algorithms such as one-bit alpha, normal map compression, and custom mipmapping. The format also includes metadata, such as image size, format, and compression settings. VTF files can be used for a variety of textures, including character skins, environment maps, and decals. The format is widely used in Valve's Source engine and can be converted to other formats using third-party tools. |

| Description | JPG is the file format for images made by digital cameras and spread throughout the world wide web. Saving in JPG format an image loses its quality, because of the size compression. But at the end you have a much smaller file easy to archive, send, and publish in the web. These are the cases when an image's size matters more than image's quality. Nonetheless, by using professional software you can select the compression degree and so affect the image's quality. |

VTF files are the textures that give Source Engine games their look — the brick walls of Half-Life 2, the weapon skins of Team Fortress 2, the environments of Portal. They are DXT-compressed for GPU efficiency and unreadable by standard image software. Converting to JPG makes them viewable, shareable, and usable in any image editor without VTFEdit or the Source SDK.
VTF (Valve Texture Format) is the native texture container for Valve's Source Engine. Each file stores:
