THM files are JPEG thumbnail images created automatically by Canon cameras, Sony camcorders, and GoPro action cameras alongside video clips. The .thm extension is simply a renamed JPEG — but because of the unfamiliar extension, no standard image viewer opens THM files by default. Converting to .jpg gives you the thumbnail image in a format that opens everywhere, instantly.
A THM (THuMbnail) file is a JPEG image stored with a different file extension. When a camera records a video, it creates a companion thumbnail so that NLE editors (Final Cut Pro, Adobe Premiere, Avid) and digital asset management software can show a preview of the video without loading the full-resolution footage.
The thumbnail is stored separately because many video formats used in older cameras (MOV, AVI from Canon EOS) do not embed a poster frame in the container. The THM file acts as the poster frame.

The .thm file contains a standard JPEG bitstream, identical in format to a .jpg file. Renaming the extension from .thm to .jpg is often sufficient to open the file in Windows Photo Viewer, macOS Preview, or any mobile gallery app. The CoolUtils converter automates this properly and writes a clean .jpg output file. No. THM files contain only the low-resolution thumbnail (typically 160×120 pixels), not the original full-resolution video frame. The companion video file (.mov, .mp4, .mts) holds the full footage. If you only have the .thm file without the video, you cannot recover the high-resolution image — only the thumbnail-quality preview exists in the THM.
