What Is an XPS File?

XPS stands for XML Paper Specification — Microsoft's PDF competitor, introduced with Windows Vista in 2006. Microsoft positioned it as an open alternative to Adobe's PDF, bundled the XPS Viewer with every version of Windows from Vista through Windows 10 (build 1703), and made it the default print-to-file format on Windows.

Despite the bundling, XPS never gained traction outside the Microsoft ecosystem. By 2018, Microsoft's own roadmap had moved on:

• Windows 10 build 1803 (April 2018) removed the XPS Viewer from default installs. It's still available as an optional Windows feature, but most users don't have it installed.
• Windows 11 continues this — XPS Viewer must be added explicitly via Settings → Apps → Optional features.
• Microsoft Print to PDF (added in Windows 10) replaced the «Microsoft XPS Document Writer» as the recommended virtual printer for most use cases.

The result: XPS files are increasingly orphaned — created in a long-running Microsoft workflow somewhere, but no one has the tooling to view them anymore.

How XPS Converts to PDF

Common Issues and Fixes
