PLT files contain HP-GL/2 plotter command streams — the instructions that AutoCAD and CAD applications sent to wide-format plotters when printing to file. Architecture, engineering, and construction firms generated millions of PLT files from the 1990s through the 2010s. The problem: physical plotters are gone, HP-GL/2 viewers are rare, and CAD software is expensive. A PLT file is a plotter command stream written in HP-GL/2 (HP Graphics Language version 2). It contains commands like PA (plot absolute), PD/PU (pen down/up), SP (select pen), and CI (circle) that a plotter executes physically. HP-GL/2 was Hewlett-Packard's 1990 update to the original 1977 HPGL, adding line weights, fill patterns, and color support. Most PLT files came from AutoCAD's PLOT command with "Plot to file" selected.
