PLT File

File extension .PLT
CategoryCAD File
DescriptionActually, it is not a format, as some people think. PLT (HPLG, Hewlett Packard Graphics Language) is the standard extension, which programs use while printing 2D graphics, particularly line drawings. Associated with AutoCAD, PLT files comprise vector graphic plotter files, which are also supported by OziExplorer, HP Graphics Language and Bentley’s CAD MicroStation. In order to print a PLT files, you should use a plotter, which uses linear drawing method instead of dotting images.

PLT to PDF — Frequently Asked Questions ▼

A .plt file is a plotter command stream written in HP-GL/2 (Hewlett-Packard Graphics Language, version 2) — the de facto standard language for technical drawing plotters since the 1980s. AutoCAD's PLOT command can save its output to a .plt file (instead of sending it directly to a plotter), and that's how most PLT files in the wild are created. The file contains the line-drawing instructions a plotter would execute.
Upload the .plt file to the converter above, choose PDF as the output format, and click Download converted file. The converter parses the HP-GL/2 commands and renders them as vector PDF, preserving line weights, colors, and pen settings. No AutoCAD, plotter driver, or specialized software needed.
The fastest way is to convert it to PDF here and open in any PDF reader. Alternatives: (1) install Autodesk DWG TrueView (free) — opens DWG natively but doesn't directly view PLT; you'd need to import via AutoCAD; (2) use a dedicated plotter file viewer like ABViewer. The PDF route avoids any install.
HPGL (Hewlett-Packard Graphics Language) is the original 1977 plotter language; HP-GL/2 (1990) added line types, fills, and 2D drawing primitives. PLT is just the file extension AutoCAD and other CAD apps use when saving HP-GL/2 output to disk. Most modern .plt files are HP-GL/2; some legacy ones are pure HPGL. The converter handles both.
Yes. HP-GL/2 carries pen number, line type, line width, and color information; the converter maps these to PDF stroke properties. Each pen number can correspond to a layer in the source DWG (when AutoCAD's plot style file maps colors-to-pens), and the resulting PDF preserves those distinctions visually.
Three common reasons: (1) someone in your project chain plotted-to-file from AutoCAD instead of plotting to a printer/PDF directly; (2) you're recovering an old archive with vintage plot-to-file outputs (1990s-2000s engineering archives often have many .plt files); (3) a plotter driver is dumping output to .plt for offline review.
Not in the online tool — it processes one file at a time. For project archive migration (architectural offices often have folders of legacy .plt outputs to convert) install the desktop Total CAD Converter: handles thousands of files per run, supports command-line automation, and lets you set per-folder output options.
Vector. The converter writes each HP-GL/2 line, arc, and polyline as a vector PDF object — text stays selectable and the drawing scales without quality loss. This matters for measuring drawings to scale in Acrobat or Bluebeam Revu after conversion.
50 MB per file in the online converter. PLT files are typically small (often a few hundred KB to a few MB) because they're just command streams; size is rarely an issue. For exceptional cases use the desktop converter for unlimited size.

Quick Guide: Converting PLT to PDF Online

To convert a PLT file to PDF: (1) drag the .plt or .hpgl file into the upload box above, (2) select PDF as the output format, (3) click Download converted file. The converter parses the HP-GL/2 plotter command stream and renders it as a vector PDF, preserving line weights, pen colors, and geometry. Files up to 50 MB, no AutoCAD or plotter software needed.

What Is a PLT File, Really?

A PLT file is a plotter command stream written in HP-GL/2 (HP Graphics Language, version 2). It's not an image and not a drawing in the CAD sense — it's a list of commands like PA1000,2000; (move pen absolute to X=1000, Y=2000) and PD; (pen down). A plotter executes these commands physically; software interprets them visually.

Most PLT files in the wild come from one source: AutoCAD's PLOT command writing to a file instead of a plotter. When an architect or engineer in 1995-2010 hit Plot in AutoCAD and chose «Plot to file», the result was a .plt. Project archives from that era typically contain hundreds or thousands of these files.

HP-GL/2: A 30-Year-Old Standard, Still Going

HP-GL/2 was Hewlett-Packard's 1990 update to the original 1977 HPGL. It added:

The format never died because plotters never died. Wide-format printers (HP DesignJet, Canon, Epson) still understand HP-GL/2 natively. AutoCAD still outputs to it. Old archives are full of it.

Why Convert PLT to PDF

Recovering Vintage Project Archives

Architectural and engineering offices often have decades of plot-to-file outputs. When someone needs to revisit a 1998 project (insurance claim, renovation, legal discovery), the .plt files are there but no one has the tooling to view them. PDF conversion turns the archive back into something readable on any modern device.

Sharing With Non-CAD Recipients

Clients, contractors, planning departments, and lawyers don't have AutoCAD or plotter software. They have a PDF reader. Converting before you send removes the «please install...» conversation.

Construction Document Submittals

Most municipal planning departments and government project portals require PDF deliverables — not .plt files. Convert to a vector PDF and the document can be measured to scale in Bluebeam Revu, Acrobat Pro, or any modern review tool.

Long-Term Archival

HP-GL/2 readers are getting rarer. PDF readers are universal and PDF/A is ISO-standardized for archival. For records management and long-term storage, convert finished plots to PDF and the format question is settled.

How the Conversion Works

  1. Parse the HP-GL/2 stream. Reads commands like PA (plot absolute), PR (plot relative), PU/PD (pen up/down), SP (select pen), LT (line type), CI (circle), AA (arc absolute).
  2. Resolve pen mappings. Default pen colors come from a built-in HP DesignJet table; if the source uses custom pen settings, those are honored.
  3. Determine the page size. HP-GL/2 doesn't store paper size explicitly — the converter infers it from the geometry's bounding box.
  4. Write vector PDF. Each line, arc, and polyline becomes a vector PDF object — text stays as text, geometry scales without quality loss.
