PLT File

File extension .PLT
CategoryCAD File
DescriptionActually, it is not a format, as some people think. PLT (HPLG, Hewlett Packard Graphics Language) is the standard extension, which programs use while printing 2D graphics, particularly line drawings. Associated with AutoCAD, PLT files comprise vector graphic plotter files, which are also supported by OziExplorer, HP Graphics Language and Bentley’s CAD MicroStation. In order to print a PLT files, you should use a plotter, which uses linear drawing method instead of dotting images.

Found a box of PLT files from a 1990s engineering project and needed to review the original blueprints without digging up plotter hardware. Converted them all to PDF and the vector lines are sharp and readable.

Inherited a legacy archive of HP-GL plotter files from a decommissioned system. This was the only tool that opened them correctly — converting to PDF let us finally digitize and file the old engineering records.

Needed to print legacy pipeline schematics stored as PLT files from the early 2000s. Converting to PDF first gave us a reliable print-ready version that matched the original drawing dimensions.

PLT to PDF — Frequently Asked Questions ▼

Upload your .plt or .hpgl file to the CoolUtils converter and click Download. The converter parses the HP-GL/2 plotter command stream and renders it as a vector PDF, preserving line weights, pen colors, and all geometry. No AutoCAD, plotter driver, or specialized software needed. Files up to 50 MB, no signup.
A PLT file contains HP-GL/2 (HP Graphics Language version 2) commands — the instructions that CAD applications send to wide-format plotters. Most PLT files come from AutoCAD's PLOT command with 'Plot to file' selected. The file contains line-drawing commands (pen moves, line weights, polygon fills) rather than a rasterized image. Without HP-GL/2 interpreter software or the original plotter hardware, PLT files cannot be opened.
Vector. The converter writes each HP-GL/2 line, arc, and polyline as a vector PDF object — not a bitmap. Text remains selectable, geometry scales without quality loss, and the drawing can be measured to scale in Acrobat or Bluebeam Revu after conversion.
HPGL (HP Graphics Language) is the original 1977 plotter format. HP-GL/2 (1990) added line weights, fill patterns, polygon fills, and improved color support. PLT is the file extension that AutoCAD and other CAD applications use when saving HP-GL/2 output to disk. Most modern .plt files contain HP-GL/2 data; legacy files from before 1990 use the original HPGL. The converter handles both.
Yes. The converter reads pen number, line type, line width, and color from the HP-GL/2 stream and maps them to PDF stroke properties. Line weights stay accurate, pen colors are preserved using the HP DesignJet default palette (or source-defined settings), and all geometry renders as vector paths in the PDF.
The online converter processes one file at a time. For batch conversion of a project archive — hundreds or thousands of legacy CAD plot files from the 1990s–2010s — use the desktop Total Doc Converter. It processes entire folders in a single run and supports command-line execution for automated archival migration pipelines.
The online converter supports files up to 50 MB. PLT files are typically small — often a few hundred KB to a few MB — because they are command streams rather than rasterized images. For unusually large PLT files, use the desktop Total Doc Converter, which has no file size limit.
Dedicated HP-GL/2 viewers can display PLT files directly — ViewCompanion and CADzation are the usual choices, and some CAD packages import HPGL. None are free beyond trial versions, and recipients rarely have them installed. Converting to PDF removes the requirement entirely: the drawing opens in any PDF reader at exact scale.
No — and this surprises many users. AutoCAD writes PLT files as one-way plotter output; it has no command to import or re-open them. If the original DWG is gone, the PLT may be the only surviving copy of the drawing. Converting the PLT to PDF recovers a viewable, printable document from that plot stream.
Usually yes. Cutting plotters speak HPGL dialects (pen up/down, moves, arcs), which the converter parses the same way as CAD output. Proprietary extensions specific to a cutter (blade pressure, speed commands) are ignored during rendering — they do not affect the visible geometry in the PDF.

Convert PLT to PDF Online — HP-GL/2 Plotter Files to Portable PDF

PLT files contain HP-GL/2 plotter command streams — the instructions that AutoCAD and CAD applications sent to wide-format plotters when printing to file. Architecture, engineering, and construction firms generated millions of PLT files from the 1990s through the 2010s. The problem: physical plotters are gone, HP-GL/2 viewers are rare, and CAD software is expensive. Converting PLT to PDF recovers the drawing as a clean vector document that opens on any device, in any PDF viewer, without AutoCAD or specialized plotter software.

What Is a PLT File?

A PLT file is a plotter command stream written in HP-GL/2 (HP Graphics Language version 2). It contains commands like PA (plot absolute), PD/PU (pen down/up), SP (select pen), and CI (circle) that a plotter executes physically. HP-GL/2 was Hewlett-Packard's 1990 update to the original 1977 HPGL, adding line weights, fill patterns, and color support. Most PLT files came from AutoCAD's PLOT command with "Plot to file" selected.
