What Is a DWF File?

DWF (Design Web Format) is Autodesk's lightweight, read-only publication format for CAD drawings. Created in the late 1990s as the «PDF for CAD», it bundles 2D and 3D geometry, sheet sets, layers, and review markups into a compressed file typically 10× smaller than the source DWG. DWFx, introduced in 2007, is the same content wrapped in an XPS container so it opens natively in Windows without Autodesk software.

The format peaked in the mid-2000s when architecture, engineering, and construction firms used Autodesk Design Review (the free DWF viewer) for redlines and submittals. Autodesk discontinued Design Review in 2017 and stopped active development of DWF in favor of cloud-based viewers like Autodesk Viewer and BIM 360. PDF has now largely replaced DWF as the universal review format — which is exactly why this conversion exists.

Why Convert DWF to PDF

Autodesk Design Review Was Discontinued

The official free DWF viewer hasn't been updated since 2017. It still runs on older Windows versions but has known compatibility issues on Windows 10/11 and is no longer downloadable from some Autodesk channels. Converting to PDF removes the dependency on a sunset product — anyone with any device, any OS, can open the file.

Sharing With Non-Autodesk Recipients

Clients, lawyers, planning departments, and external reviewers don't install Autodesk Design Review. They have a PDF reader. Converting to PDF before you send avoids the «please install Autodesk Design Review (which doesn't really work anymore)» conversation.

Archival and Long-Term Storage

DWF was a transitional format and Autodesk's roadmap has moved on. Files saved today in DWF may not have first-class viewer support in 5-10 years. Most municipal planning departments and government project portals require PDF deliverables. Even when the original came as a DWF (because the architect was running an older AutoCAD with DWF set as the publish default), the official record needs to be PDF.

How DWF Converts to PDF

The converter performs four steps:

1. Parse the DWF container. Reads either the binary DWF format (legacy, .dwf) or the XPS-based DWFx format (modern, .dwfx) — both transparently.
2. Enumerate sheets. A DWF can contain one or many sheets (typical for project sets — title sheet, plans, elevations, sections, details). Each sheet becomes a separate PDF page.
3. Resolve layers and viewmarkers. Layer visibility from the source DWG is honored; named views (viewmarkers) become PDF named destinations so reviewers can jump between them.
4. Write vector PDF. Each line, arc, hatch, and text glyph becomes a vector PDF object — not a rasterized bitmap. Text remains searchable.

Common Issues and Fixes

• «What will open this DWF?» If you don't have any Autodesk software, you have three options: install Autodesk DWG TrueView (free, current), use the legacy Autodesk Design Review (free, no longer maintained), or convert to PDF here and view in any browser. Most users in 2026 just convert to PDF.
• DWF won't open in Adobe. Adobe Acrobat doesn't read DWF natively — it's an Autodesk format. Convert to PDF first.
• Some sheets are missing in the PDF. Multi-sheet DWFs sometimes have hidden or password-protected sheets. Open the DWF in Design Review (if available) and verify all sheets are visible before converting; or use the desktop converter where you can list and select sheets explicitly.
• 3D DWF looks flat. The default 2D projection is the saved viewpoint. The desktop converter supports preset isometric views.
• Text appears as «????». A custom SHX font referenced by the source drawing wasn't embedded in the DWF. Substitute fonts are used during conversion. To fix at the source, change to a TrueType font in AutoCAD before publishing the DWF.
• Markups look different. Annotation styles between Design Review and Acrobat differ slightly; the underlying redlines are preserved but rendered using PDF-native markup conventions.
