DWF (Design Web Format) was Autodesk's lightweight publication format for CAD drawings — the "PDF for CAD" created to share engineering drawings without distributing editable DWG source files. The format peaked in the 2000s when Autodesk Design Review (the free DWF viewer) was standard in architecture and engineering. Autodesk discontinued Design Review in 2017 and stopped developing DWF in favor of cloud viewers. Today, most recipients cannot open DWF files. Converting to PDF solves this: everyone has a PDF reader, no Autodesk account required.
DWF bundles 2D and 3D geometry, sheet sets, layers, review markups, and viewmarkers into a compressed file typically 10× smaller than the source DWG. DWFx, introduced in 2007, wraps the same content in an XPS container — it opens natively in Windows without Autodesk software. Both formats are read-only publications of CAD drawings.
