JFIF File

File extension .JFIF
CategoryImage File
DescriptionJFIF is an abbreviation for JPEG File Interchange Format, which is in fact one of the JPG file formats (extensions). It can be used for the convenient exchange of image files. However, the full range of functions of the actual JPEG format cannot be used. To open a JFIF file, you can use default programs, but to convert images back, you need a specialized JFIF to JPG converter. Overall, the JFIF format is an image format optimized for exchanging files on the internet. It compresses the original image documents, making them lighter and more suitable for sending. It is often used by professionals in the fields of graphic design, photo art, media, web design, etc.

JFIF to PDF Converter — Frequently Asked Questions ▼

JFIF (JPEG File Interchange Format) is a file format spec that defines how to store a JPEG bitstream. In practice, a .jfif file is bit-for-bit identical to a .jpg file — it contains the same compressed image data. The only difference is the file extension. Windows 10 build 1809 (October 2018) changed the default MIME-to-extension mapping for image/jpeg from .jpg to .jfif in Edge and the Photos app, which is why many users suddenly started seeing .jfif files.
Upload your .jfif file to the CoolUtils converter. The converter reads the JPEG image data and embeds it in a PDF document. Download the .pdf when done. No software installation, no Adobe Acrobat required.
No. The JPEG image data inside the .jfif file is embedded directly into the PDF without re-encoding. Every pixel is preserved at the original compression level. The PDF simply acts as a wrapper around the existing JPEG bitstream.
Renaming .jfif to .jpg gives you a JPEG file that opens in image viewers. Converting to PDF is a different goal — PDFs are required for document submission (government forms, insurance attachments, contracts, job applications), email systems that require PDF attachments, and any workflow where a portable, printable, one-file document is needed rather than a raw image.
Submitting screenshots as PDF evidence in legal or HR matters; attaching images to insurance claims in PDF format; converting downloaded product images (.jfif from e-commerce sites) to PDFs for documentation; archiving web screenshots in a printable format; and complying with file-format requirements on government or banking portals.
The online converter handles one file at a time, producing one PDF per JFIF. To combine multiple JFIF files into a single PDF document, use the desktop Total Image Converter, which supports batch conversion and multi-page PDF output.
Yes. The JFIF extension became common when Windows 10 build 1809 shipped a registry change that made Edge and the Photos app save JPEG images downloaded from the web as .jfif. Microsoft never reversed this change, so users on Windows 10 and 11 who download images via Edge or save screenshots in Photos regularly end up with .jfif files.

Convert JFIF to PDF — Embed JPEG Images in Portable Documents

JFIF files are JPEG images with a different file extension — the image data is identical. Converting a .jfif to PDF embeds the photo in a portable document format accepted by insurance portals, government forms, HR systems, and any workflow that requires a PDF attachment rather than a raw image file. No quality loss, no re-encoding, no Adobe Acrobat required.

Why Does Windows Save Images as JFIF?

In Windows 10 build 1809 (October 2018), Microsoft changed the MIME-type registry entry for image/jpeg from .jpg to .jfif in the Edge browser and the Photos app. This means that when users download JPEG images from the web in Edge, or save screenshots via the Photos app's share sheet, the files are saved with a .jfif extension instead of the expected .jpg. Microsoft has not reversed this change in Windows 11.

The result: millions of Windows users have accumulated .jfif files in their Downloads folder that need to be submitted as PDFs to portals that only accept PDF.

JFIF vs JPEG — Are They the Same?

Yes. JFIF (JPEG File Interchange Format, ECMA-119) and JPEG are the same compressed image bitstream. The JFIF spec defines the APP0 header marker (bytes FF E0 followed by JFIF) that most JPEG encoders write. The file extension (.jfif vs .jpg) is a convention, not a technical distinction. Converting .jfif to PDF is lossless — the same compressed pixel data is placed inside the PDF container without any re-encoding.

Common JFIF to PDF Submission Scenarios

ScenarioWhy PDF Is Required
Insurance claimsDamage photos must be submitted as PDF attachments on insurer portals
Government applicationsPassport photo, ID scan, or utility bill evidence must be PDF
HR / recruitment formsID verification photos for onboarding portals require PDF upload
Court e-filingPhoto exhibits must be attached as PDF in electronic court systems
Banking KYCKnow-your-customer document portals require PDF for photo ID
Medical recordsPatient-supplied photos (wound documentation, skin conditions) must be PDF for EHR upload

Three Ways to Deal with JFIF Files

If you need a .jpg file (not a PDF): simply rename the .jfif file to .jpg — it will open in any image viewer. If you need a PDF: use this converter to embed the image in a PDF document. If you want to prevent Windows from creating .jfif files in the future: open Registry Editor, navigate to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MIME\Database\Content Type\image/jpeg, and change the Extension value from .jfif to .jpg. This requires administrator rights and affects all apps that use the Windows MIME registry.

Can I Combine Multiple JFIF Files into One PDF?

The online converter processes one file at a time and produces a single-page PDF per JFIF file. To combine multiple JFIF images into a single multi-page PDF (for example, several pages of a scanned document), use the desktop Total Image Converter, which supports batch conversion and multi-image PDF merging.
