| Description | DXF (Drawing Interchange File Format, Drawing Exchange Format) was intended as a universal extension to boost the compatibility of documents created in AutoCAD. Based on ASCII, it shows better compatibility than DWG. For instance, the Valve Hammer Editor exports 3D data in the DXL format, so that other programs can be used to open them. Over its history, which started in 1982, the DXF format has undergone numerous transformations. |

| Description | Adobe Systems Portable Document Format (PDF) format provides all the contents of a printed document in electronic form, including text and images, as well as technical details like links, scales, graphs, and interactive content. You can open this file in free Acrobat Reader and scroll through the page or the entire document, which is generally one or more pages. The PDF format is used to save pre-designed periodicals, brochures, and flyers. |

DXF is the universal CAD exchange format — supported by AutoCAD, FreeCAD, LibreCAD, BricsCAD, and hundreds of other applications. But recipients who need to review a drawing (clients, contractors, fabricators, project managers) rarely have CAD software installed. Converting DXF to PDF produces a scalable, printable, universally viewable document that opens on any device without a CAD license.
DXF (Drawing Exchange Format) was created by Autodesk in 1982 to enable interoperability between AutoCAD and third-party CAD applications. Unlike DWG (AutoCAD's proprietary binary format), DXF is either ASCII text or binary with a documented structure that any software can parse. DXF is the de facto standard for sharing CAD geometry across different tools and platforms.
DXF files store geometric entities (lines, arcs, splines, polylines, dimensions, text, hatches), layer definitions, block references, and coordinate system data. The format has been updated with each AutoCAD release (DXF R12, R14, 2000, 2004, 2007, 2010, 2013, 2018).
| Property | DXF | |
|---|---|---|
| Primary purpose | CAD data exchange and editing | Portable document viewing |
| Viewer requirement | CAD software or DXF viewer app | Any PDF viewer (free) |
| Vector quality | Yes (native vector) | Yes (rendered as vector PDF) |
| Editable geometry | Yes | No (view-only) |
| Layers | Yes (DXF LAYER entities) | Yes (PDF Optional Content Groups) |
| Dimensions and annotations | Yes (DIMENSION entities) | Rendered as text/graphics |
| Searchable text | Not by conventional PDF search | Text entities become searchable |
| File size | Variable (KB to MB) | Typically smaller than source DXF |
The converter renders all common DXF entity types: LINE, ARC, CIRCLE, ELLIPSE, POLYLINE, LWPOLYLINE, SPLINE, 3DFACE, SOLID, TEXT, MTEXT, DIMENSION, LEADER, HATCH, BLOCK (INSERT), and raster IMAGE references. Layers are preserved as PDF Optional Content Groups. Line weights and colors from the DXF are applied to the PDF rendering.
CNC job shops, laser cutting services, and waterjet fabricators receive DXF files for cutting path data. They frequently need a PDF version to attach to job tickets, quote requests, and delivery documentation. Converting the same DXF to PDF creates a human-readable reference drawing that shop-floor staff can follow alongside the CNC program — no CAD software on the shop floor required.

For sharing a single drawing with a client, the online converter is the fastest option. For converting dozens of DXF files from a project folder or automating quote package preparation, Total CAD Converter handles the full batch without manual steps.
Total CAD Converter includes a full command-line interface for automated DXF-to-PDF workflows — useful for engineering pipelines, quote systems, and document management integrations:
cadconverter.exe /S "C:\Drawings\*.dxf" /F PDF /O "C:\PDF-Output"
Batch-convert an entire project folder of DXF files to PDF in one command. Use Windows Task Scheduler to run nightly exports automatically, or integrate the command into a .bat script that fires when new drawings arrive in a watch folder.
