| Description | DGN (short for design) is the native CAD drawing format of Bentley MicroStation, inherited from the Intergraph IGDS system. A single .dgn file stores 2D and 3D vector geometry together with levels (layers), cells, text, dimensions, line styles and attachments to other design files, so one drawing can pull in a whole set of related models. Two incompatible generations are still in circulation: the older V7 (ISFF) files written by MicroStation up to version J, and V8 files introduced in 2001, which use a compound-document container and add named levels, unlimited undo and design history. Outside MicroStation few applications open either generation, so DGN drawings are normally converted to PDF for review and sharing, or to DXF for editing in AutoCAD. |

DGN is a CAD drawing format, while PDF is a fixed-layout document format that looks the same everywhere. People convert DGN to PDF to share or archive the drawing in a universal format.
